CAR RENTAL AIRPORT in Italy

The convenience of car rental at the airport

Traveling can be an exciting experience, but managing transportation upon arrival can often be stressful. This is where the convenience of airport car rental comes into play. Renting a car directly at the airport allows you to start your journey without delays, giving you the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want.

One of the main advantages of renting a car at the airport is the immediate availability of a vehicle right outside the terminal, eliminating the need to search for taxis or public transportation. Whether you're traveling for business or leisure, having a car ready upon arrival makes your journey more relaxed and helps you save time. Airport car rental also offers a wide range of vehicles to choose from, ensuring you can select the one that best suits your needs. Whether you need a compact car for easy city navigation or an SUV to explore rural areas, you'll always find the perfect option for you.

Additionally, many car rental companies at airports provide extra services such as GPS, child seats, and extended insurance coverage, making your trip even more comfortable and safe.

Renting a car at the airport is the ideal solution for those seeking convenience and freedom in their travels, avoiding the complications of public transport or the search for alternative options. Next time you plan a trip, consider adopting the airport car rental strategy for a stress-free start.

Where to find car rental at airports in Italy

When traveling by plane, having a car available as soon as you land is an invaluable convenience. This is why knowing the location of airport car rental points is essential for a smooth and hassle-free travel experience.

Car rentals at airports are usually located in easily accessible areas, often within the terminal itself or in the immediate vicinity. Many international and domestic airports offer car rental services directly in the arrivals area, making the car pick-up process simple and quick. In some cases, airport car rental points may be located in dedicated areas outside the main terminal. In these situations, airports provide free shuttle services for customers, connecting the terminal with the rental area, ensuring a convenient and fast transfer.

For example, in larger airports such as Rome Fiumicino or Milan Malpensa, you will find a wide range of rental companies located within the terminal or just outside, all well-signposted and easily reachable on foot. Even in smaller airports, car rental services are always well integrated and designed to offer maximum comfort to travelers. Knowing the exact location of car rentals at airports allows you to better plan your trip, minimizing waiting times and maximizing your freedom of movement once you land. If you plan to rent a car, always check in advance where the rental points are at your arrival airport for a stress-free and well-organized trip.

Airport Passenger Rankings 2022

In 2022, Fiumicino remains the top airport in Italy for passenger numbers. Capodichino moves up one position, and Venice climbs in the rankings..

In 2022, 164,641,136 passengers passed through Italian airports (source: Assoaeroporti). Fiumicino remains the most popular airport in Italy, although it is progressively losing market share, closely followed by Milan Malpensa. With the acquisition of ITA Airways by Lufthansa, Rome Fiumicino Airport is expected to regain the lost market share, and much more passenger traffic is anticipated to pass through Milan Linate. Compared to last year, Naples Airport moves up one position at the expense of Catania, which nevertheless remains the busiest Sicilian airport for passenger traffic, while Palermo Airport loses three positions in the rankings. Venice Airport, however, gains three positions, increasing from 3,420,038 passengers in 2021 to 9,319,156 in 2022. Linate climbs one position, while Bologna drops one. Two out of three trips are booked online, with percentages exceeding 70% for business travel. According to ISTAT (also the source for the following data), 93% of trips are for leisure, leaving 7% for business travel. The average duration of a leisure trip is 6.5 days, down from 6.9 days in 2021, while the average duration of a business trip is 3.8 days, also down from the previous year (4.8 days). Four out of five travelers passing through airports are Italian: 49% are from northern Italy, 27.5% from the south, and 23.5% from the center. Among foreign travelers, 68% come from European Union countries, 20% from other European countries, and 12% from other regions of the world.

Market shares 2019-2022

The decline in the number of passengers transiting through Rome Fiumicino Airport in recent years seems to have halted. Italy's largest airport is recovering passengers compared to previous years relative to other Italian airports but remains far from the 2019 figures, where more than one in five passengers in Italy used the Rome hub. Market shares are increasing for Naples Capodichino Airport (at 6.6%) and Bologna Airport (at 5.2%).

Pre-pandemic comparison

In a comparison with the year before the pandemic, we note that the main national airports, along with Venice Airport, are the ones suffering the most. The increase in Linate should also be viewed cautiously, given that the airport was closed from July 27 to October 25, 2019, transferring its operations to Milan Malpensa. Fully recovering pre-pandemic traffic is Naples Capodichino Airport, which once again sees 10 million passengers, and Bari Airport, which, with a passenger increase of over 10%, has grown the most in the top 10 from 2019 to today.
