The total number of cars registered for long-term rental, broken down by brand, confirms the leadership of Fiat, which places three vehicles in the top 10. The Fiat long-term rental accounts for 15.7% of the entire sector’s market share in Italy and is followed at a considerable distance by Volkswagen long-term rental, which holds onto second place. There is, however, a swap in positions between Audi rentals and Peugeot, with the former, thanks to a 35% increase compared to the previous year, securing the third step of the podium.
The positions of BMW and Jeep remain stable, in sixth and seventh place respectively, although Jeep gains +33%, rising from 13,911 to 18,562 units. Citroen climbs three positions, taking seventh place with a 48% increase, while Mercedes slips below 10,000 units.
Turning to the brands outside the top 10, the DR by De Risio immediately catches the eye: it goes from just 5 rental cars in 2021 to 8,891 the following year, thereby entering eleventh place and overtaking other Italian brands such as Lancia (which nonetheless boasts a 93% increase) and Alfa Romeo. Also noteworthy are the performances of Seat (+152%) and Kia (+115%).

Italians’ love for long-term rental is evident from the total fleet of long-term rental vehicles, which amounted to 1,127,227 units as of 12/31/2022, a 9.2% increase compared to 2021, setting a new record. New orders placed in 2022 show a trend toward longer rental durations, with the most significant increases for rentals exceeding 48 months, although the most preferred durations remain 48-month long-term rentals (38% of the total) and 36 months (29%). Additionally, 39% of rentals include mileage exceeding 30,000 km.
The preferred fuel type for long-term rental cars in Italy remains diesel, which accounted for 106,476 vehicles rented in 2022, representing 34.3% of the market. However, hybrid cars for long-term rental are quickly closing in on the top spot, with 96,569 units (31.1%) and a 37.8% increase compared to 2021, positioning them to take the lead. In third place is petrol long-term rental (48,331, 15.5%), ahead of plug-in hybrids. The long-term rental of electric cars, however, saw a negative trend compared to 2021, with a 24.2% drop in long-term rental cars, ranking fifth and closely followed by LPG long-term rentals, which boasted a 292.5% increase from the previous year.
The most rented segments are group C (midsize cars) (116,922 units, 37.6% of the total) and group B (compact cars) (32.9%), together accounting for more than two-thirds of the market. Compact cars, in particular, experienced a significant surge in 2022, growing from 56,279 units in 2021 to 102,404 the following year, an 82% year-over-year increase. Next are segment D (upper-midsize cars) (44,241, 14.2%) and segment A (city cars) (37,705, 12.1%).
Among vehicles registered for long-term rental by brand, the undisputed market leader is Fiat. The long-term Fiat rental represents 15.3% of the market with 47,695 units, while Volkswagen holds second place with 26,384 vehicles. Climbing to the podium is Audi long-term rental, which, thanks to a 35% increase over the previous year, surpasses Peugeot rentals.

The most rented long-term model is the Fiat Panda, with 25,302 vehicles rented last year, followed by the Peugeot 3008 (10,495) and the Jeep Renegade (9,357). The Citroen C3 (+81.8%) made a significant leap to fourth place, while the Lancia Ypsilon (+93.0%) also surged forward.
