The Fiat Panda remains the queen of long-term rental even in 2024, with a 12.7% increase in registrations in Q2, despite the market decline. During the same period, the Volkswagen Tiguan, the BMW X1 with a significant rise, the Kia Sportage, and the Citroen C3 follow. In the semi-annual ranking, the Nissan Qashqai ranks second behind the Panda, with the Kia Sportage still in the TOP 5.
In the second quarter of long-term rentals, the Fiat Panda confirms itself as the most in-demand model, recording a 12.7% increase in registrations, despite an 11.7% drop in the overall long-term rental (LTR) car market, for a total of 7,874 units registered. It is followed by the Volkswagen Tiguan, which remains almost stable with a 3.6% increase, while the BMW X1 quintupled its registrations compared to the same period last year. The Kia Sportage also saw significant growth of 35.5%, and the Citroen C3 quadrupled its registrations.
Gasoline cars, including mild hybrids, continue to dominate the market, accounting for 40.1% of registrations in the first half of 2024, although this is lower compared to 2023. Diesel cars, including mild hybrids, experienced a more pronounced decline, being overtaken by gasoline. In the second quarter, diesel cars held 37.1% of the market, losing over 4.5 percentage points. Traditional hybrids—both full hybrid and plug-in—make up 17% of the overall market, with full hybrids showing strong growth (+23% in the second quarter) and plug-ins experiencing a steep drop (-39.6%). Electric cars saw their market share shrink to 2.5% in the second quarter (3% for the half-year), while gas-powered cars remained essentially stable, albeit with marginal volumes and market share.
In the long-term rental sector, the Fiat Panda once again confirms itself as the most requested model, with a significant 25.08% increase in registrations, despite a 13.55% drop in the overall passenger car market for long-term rentals. It is followed by the Nissan Qashqai, which shows a 62.16% increase, the Volkswagen T-Roc with stable volumes compared to the previous year, the Toyota Yaris Cross with an impressive +68.77%, and the Kia Sportage at +21.6%.

Compared to last year's ranking, only 6 cars remain in the top list: the Fiat Panda, still the undisputed queen of the market; the Lancia Ypsilon, which takes second place with a 32.3% increase compared to rentals in 2022; the Peugeot 3008, which drops one position but remains on the podium. Also, the Volkswagen Tiguan, which moves up from thirteenth to fourth place; the Ford Puma, which jumps from twentieth to ninth place; and the Jeep Renegade, which drops from the podium but still remains in the top 10 most rented cars.
The other four cars closing the Top 10 are the new entries: the Alfa Romeo Tonale, replacing the Stelvio in the ranking, Renault Captur, Dacia Duster, and Toyota Yaris Cross.
The lower part of the ranking consists solely of new models that were not present in last year's ranking: Opel Corsa, Audi Q2, BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Seat Arona, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Skoda Karoq, Citroen C4, and Mazda CX-30. Following are the Nissan Qashqai, SEAT Ibiza, Ford Focus, Renault Megane, and Volkswagen Golf.

With a 71.6% increase in registrations compared to 2021, the Fiat Panda once again proves to be Italians’ favorite in 2022, especially by outclassing its rival, the Fiat 500, which continues to lose ground in the rankings and now sits in seventh place (–26.9%). Benefitting from this are the Peugeot 3008, which takes the silver medal while staying stable at around 10,000 rented units, and the Jeep Renegade, which moves from fifth to third place. This further strengthens the brand’s presence in the standings by also positioning the Jeep Compass in fifth place.
The annual performances of the Citroen C3 (+81.8%) and the Lancia Ypsilon (+93%) are remarkable, both entering the TOP 10. The C3 climbs seven positions, while the Ypsilon climbs eight. On the other hand, the Fiat 500 and Fiat 500X lose positions: check out all the vehicles for Fiat long-term rental. Rounding out the Top 10 are the Audi Q3 and the DR 4.0, which makes its debut straight into the top ten.
In the lower part of the ranking, the Fiat Tipo (+33.8%), the Audi A3 (+89.4%), and the Cupra Formentor (+272.8%) all gain positions. Despite placing second in the overall ranking, Volkswagen does not have any vehicles among the top 10: the Tiguan, Golf, and T-Roc occupy positions 13 through 15. The only Alfa in the standings is the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, which goes from 5,823 units in 2021 to 6,354 in the following year (+9.1%).
